[ Sidewalk entrance.

]

Between the big fire in 1889 and when they sealed off the original ground-level entrances to buildings in the early 1900s, they went through a number of years where only the street itself was raised - you had to go down ladders to the original sidewalk and storefronts. This entranceway provides similar access today.

[ Another stop on the

tour ]

At another stop on the tour, the guide told a bunch of interesting stories such as the one behind the cause of the big fire, the area's first female entrepreneur and how UPS got started.

I highly recommend the tour for its many and varied tidbits of interesting trivia. My favourite quote of the trip was also uttered here: "If you see a rat, just go ahead and scream."

[ Up through a

skylight ]

On the tour, you can look up at the sidewalk through a glass-brick skylight.

[ The skylight

What it looks like to most passersby. The guy on the left smoked at every possible opportunity on the tour.
