[ Nanaimo, the harbour city ]

As we headed north past Nanaimo I could only think to myself that every city on Vancouver Island is a "harbour city."

[ Cathedral Grove ]

On the highway between Nanaimo and Port Alberni is Cathedral Grove, a stunning collection of giant trees protected in a national park.

[ Emma with a really big tree. ]

That's a really big tree!

[ Fruit market outside Port Alberni ]

After failing to find a suitable lunch location in Port Alberni itself, we stopped at a small fruit and vegetable market outside the town. We picked up some excellent blueberries, cherries, strawberries and green peas, with the latter consumed by the time we got to Tofino.

[ Tofino harbour from the hotel ]

Simultaneously the most expensive and poorest-rated hotel on our trip, the Days Inn Tofino actually gave us a decent room. Sure, the fish-processing pier did kind of dominate the view from the balcony, but we were able to look beyond that.
