Now on the interstate heading west, we started to notice quite a bit of snow on the ground. But the highway itself was clear and traffic was light. Our plan make the three-hour drive in time to get to Graceland for a tour was unfolding as expected.




We should have stopped.




Our first sign of trouble on the highway came about an hour from Memphis. We started passing cars in the ditch, with obvious signs of winter-driving ineptitude. To be fair, they're not exactly experienced snow/ice drivers in these parts, but the road was bare and dry and we couldn't see what the fuss was all about. But then we hit a big, long train of slow-moving vehicles. It was about what you'd expect if there was an accident or a lane closure ahead, except it stretched on for miles.




After about 20 minutes of stop-and-go traffic on the highway, we were overtaken by a bozo driving his pickup along the ditch. He was going quite quickly and had almost no control over his truck, as seen here as he veers towards the oncoming lanes of traffic.




We only saw one or two plows on our entire I-40 drive. It turns out they could have used a few more. We had an inkling that there must have been quite a bit of snow overnight because not much farther along we came upon...
