Sorry for the blurry photo, but these are the controls for the cable car, looking right down at the bricks on the street underneath. The main theory behind cable cars is that it grabs hold of a moving cable under the street level. These levers do the grabbing.




There were lots of people on board, so I had to sit on the side facing the other side of the street. From this point on, I was trying to figure out how to take a picture that captured me hanging off the side a la stereotypical San Francisco photos, but the fact is that one hand for holding plus one hand for picturing makes for an awkward combination.




This is the result of trying one of those awkward photos...

The cable cars have their own traffic lights in some spots, including this red light on one side of a big hill, that I suspect are designed to co-ordinate with streetcars coming up the other side of the hill. But it left us waiting for a red light while sitting in the middle of an intersection, blocking traffic.




I can honestly say I have no idea how I ended up with this picture in my camera.
